Yes, that was the Batman story! And it's a good question about Archetypes, whether they are themselves self-aware apart from us. They do and say surprising things, so possibly the answer is 'yes.' I will try to remember to ask one the next time I encounter one.
Also, do we humans collectively have the capability to bring new Archetypes up from the Collective Consciousness? If the Batman phenomenon is a new Archetype, then the answer would also seem to be 'yes.'--Although I suppose it is possible that the Batman Archetype was already in the Collective Unconscious before the first Batman comic book, and chose to manifest itself through a series of comics, TV, and movies.
The concepts of 'Egregor' and 'Archetype' seem to me to be related. Both run through groups, but I tend to think of Archetypes more as persons, and a group Egregor as more of a shared personality.
